Are you an Apprentice or a Trainee: Neither, I’m a Specialist

Please complete your answers to the questions

Q1. How long have you been at British Gas?

Nearly 2 years (August will be 2 years).

Q2  What were you doing before you joined British Gas?

I had done a range of jobs, mainly retail and office work and also a bit of travelling around Australia and New Zealand.

Q3  What made you decide to join British Gas?

I wanted to do a hands on job, and wanted the security and opportunities of working for a big company.  I had always heard good things about British Gas as an employer.  I saw the advert for Smart Energy Experts on the British Gas website and having done a plumbing course – thought why not!

Q4  Can you remember your first day of your training? What was your initial impression?

It’s a bit of a blur, but I remember being quite nervous, and wondered whether I would enjoy the job and what my team would be like.

Q5  What’s been the most memorable part of your training or work life so far?

Getting to know all my colleagues at the academy when I first started my training.  Forming close bonds and helping each other through the learning process.

Q6  What did you enjoy most about being part of the British Gas apprenticeship/trainee scheme?

The support I got from my team.  Both the people I was with at the academy and the guys in my ward.  I’m really lucky to have a really great bunch to work alongside.  They’re always at the end of the phone if you have a problem or just want a chat.

Q7   Where do you see yourself in five years time?

I’ve already progressed to become a Specialist which I’m really pleased about.  I am now working towards becoming a Coach or eventually a manager.  Perhaps get involved in other areas of the business.

Q8   How do you spend your spare time?

In my spare time I like to go swimming, chill out with my friends or if the weather chills out I enjoy camping.

Q9 What unusual thing would people not necessarily know about you?

I did a Skydive and Canoyon Swing when I was in New Zealand, and I used to do Kickboxing when I was younger. So don’t mess with me!
