An insight into apprenticeships with IS at British Gas
9 February 2012 Posted by Ruman Rahman Project Management Office Apprentice
To coincide with National Apprentice Week, we caught up with Ruman Rahman, Project Management Office Apprentice, with British Gas in Staines to find out more about apprenticeships with IS at British Gas.
How long have you been at British Gas?
Since September 2011
What were you doing before you joined British Gas?
I was working full time at Sainsbury’s Local.
What made you decide to join the apprenticeship/trainee scheme?
The opportunity to learn more about project management and gain experience, also British Gas is a huge company so I knew it would be a great way to start my career. I did not want to go to university and incur a huge debt I would rather work and gain experience for 2 years and then have a career.
Can you remember your first day of your training? What was your initial impression?
My first day at training was in Aberdovey in West Wales. I was there for a week with 30 other apprentices who I had never met before and it was the best possible way to meet them. A great start to an apprenticeship and I learnt a great deal of skills from day one.
What’s been the most memorable part of your training so far?
When I first stared I was not familiar with the process and structure of Project Management. My first training week involved Project Fundamentals and that helped me understand so much more about my role.
What do you enjoy most about being part of the British Gas apprenticeship/trainee scheme?
The fact that you are valued by the company and given responsibility from the first day at work proving that they trust you.
What are you most looking forward to when you qualify?
I look forward to having a job where I can use the skills I have learnt. I want to continue gaining experience through on-the-job training.
Where do you see yourself in five years time?
I hope to stay with British Gas and further my career in Project Management. I hope to be at least a Junior Project Manager within 5 years.
How do you spend your spare time?
I work full time so you have to make the most of EVERY weekend. So I always make sure I do something on the weekend usually with my friends.
what unusual thing would people not necessarily know about you?
I can whistle through my nose.
