What is the best way to find a job that suits my needs?

Visit the job search page to find positions that might be right for you. The search results page will show all open roles that match your criteria - click on the job title for a detailed description and the option to apply.

Did you find the answer you were looking for? If not, contact us.

What can I do if there is nothing currently suitable for me?

If the results show no suitable positions, you can register for job alerts. Once you have registered, as soon as a new position becomes available that meets your search criteria you will be emailed or texted with an alert.

Did you find the answer you were looking for? If not, contact us.

Can I send my CV speculatively for current or future vacancies?

At this time we only accept applications for open vacancies, which are advertised on the website. Please do register for job alerts to ensure you are aware as soon as a suitable vacancy arises.

Did you find the answer you were looking for? If not, contact us.

What do I do if there are no jobs to apply for in my area when I put in my postcode?

Some of our recruitment is done by area. These are normally our field-based roles, such as our Apprentice and Trainee roles. If there are no positions showing when you enter your postcode you should register for a job alert. You will then receive an email or text when a position comes up in your area. For field-based roles you cannot apply for a position outside your home area.

Did you find the answer you were looking for? If not, contact us.

Will I still be considered for the Appenticeship if I don't have 4 GCSEs or an equivalent qualification?

No, these qualifications are the minimum requirements for this Apprenticeship scheme. You may, however, wish to consider a Traineeship.

Did you find the answer you were looking for? If not, contact us.

Is salary negotiable?

Some roles, for example Engineers and Customer Service Advisers, have a fixed salary. Salaries for other roles, for example those in our Business Support Functions, will depend on your level of experience.

Did you find the answer you were looking for? If not, contact us.

If the job I applied for is no longer on the website, does this mean my application will no longer be considered?

As long as you have fully completed and submitted your application, and received an acknowledgement from us, it will be reviewed in line with all the other applications we have received.

Did you find the answer you were looking for? If not, contact us.

Why do you need to know my ethnic origin?

Your ethnic origin is not used in the recruitment process or known by the staff assessing your application. It is used solely for management information to enable us to review our recruitment process in line with equal opportunities legislation.

What happens if I move house? Can I still be considered for the position I originally applied for?

If you applied for a field-based role using your postcode, you must check with us to see if you are still in the right location for the position you have applied for. If you are not, you will have to see if there is a similar position available in your new area and re-apply for that position there.

Did you find the answer you were looking for? If not, contact us.

What happens after I apply?

Your application will be acknowledged once it has been submitted. We will then inform you of your progress at each stage of the selection process. Depending on the role you have applied for, the selection process could involve tests as well as an interview or assessment.

Did you find the answer you were looking for? If not, contact us.

Are there any age restrictions?

At British Gas we pride ourselves on our diverse workforce. As such, we impose no restrictions on age, ethnicity or religious preference.

What are my working hours?

Some of our roles may involve working shifts. Please refer to the job description of the role you applied for to find the details of shift requirements.

Did you find the answer you were looking for? If not, contact us.

What do I need to wear to work?

Each site has a different dress code. A shirt and trousers for gents and the female equivalent is a safe bet, but ask when booking your assessment centre for further details on individual sites. For some roles a uniform will be provided.

Do I need to answer all the questions that are part of an application for a job?

Yes. The more information you provide on your application, the easier it will be for hiring managers and recruiters to assess your skills and qualifications for the position.

Did you find the answer you were looking for? If not, contact us.

I believe that I have a condition that requires adjustments to the assessment process – what adjustments can be made?

If you have a condition or circumstance that may affect your application you should alert the Centrica Recruitment Team to this when asked during the application process. The Centrica Recruitment Team can then make the hiring manager aware so that possible adjustments can be discussed with you.

There are no adjustments required to the online personality and ability tests. There is no time limit with any online personality questionnaires, so you can take as long as you need to complete them. Our online ability tests were designed to avoid the adverse impact that timed tests can cause to candidates whose reading speed may be affected by visual impairment, conditions such as dyslexia, as well as those who speak English as an additional language.

The tests avoid having an adverse impact on those with a slower reading speed by using a number of features:

  • Time limits are extended by 25-50% for all candidates, which research has indicated does not advantage non-dyslexic candidates, but ensures that dyslexic candidates can demonstrate their full ability
  • Verbal tests contain business English only and do not require any culture-specific knowledge
  • Numerical tests keep verbal information to a minimum to prevent scores being affected by speed reading
  • All tests can be adjusted within your browser to adopt large print-sizes, high-contrast settings, and are fully compatible with screen-readers and refreshable Braille

I have received an acknowledgement of my application but when will I hear more?

We will keep you informed at each stage of the selection process, which varies depending on the role you have applied for. Please refer to the recruitment process for further details.

I have started the test but have been disconnected, what should I do?

If you lose your connection while taking a test you will need to log back in to your account via this website and reset the tests. The system will only permit you to reset the tests once.

I have received an email stating I have not been successful and will not be invited to the next stage of the selection process. Can I get feedback as to why?

Rest assured every application is carefully reviewed and considered based on the information provided before any final decision is reached. Owing to the high numbers of applications received, we are unable to provide any feedback to any candidates who are unsuccessful prior to attending an assessment centre or interview.

I do not have a computer of my own, is it alright to use someone else's?

There is no problem with using someone else's computer. We would recommend that before you start your application you should set up a personal email account (such as Hotmail or Yahoo). You will then be able to access this at any time on any computer that has Internet access, whether it be at the library, or at a friend's or relative's home.

I don't think I did very well in the test, should I still attend the interview?

Most definitely. The test results form only one part of all of the information that the interviewer gathers.

I'm changing my email address. How will you contact me?

If you are about to change your email address, you must update your details in your account. Your email address is the same as your login username. To update your details sign on to your account, using your old email address, click on 'Personal Details' and then click on 'Modify Log on Details'. Update your email address and save. It is your responsibility to ensure your email details are always up to date as this is our main method of communication with you.

I can't remember my password to log into my account

Your login and password are contained in the email we sent when you began your application. If you no longer have the email then click on the 'Forgotten Password' link.

What do I do if I have more than 6 penalty points on my licence?

Unfortunately we cannot consider anyone who has more than 6 points. You will have to wait until your points are removed and then apply for the job.

I'm just about to leave school, is there anything I can do to improve my chances of getting employed?

Any practical/customer service experience or even a college NVQ/SNVQ course with transferable skills will enhance your application. Please review the recruitment process for more information.

What happens if I have a holiday booked during the training period?

As the training programme is not a modular programme it is vitally important you are able to attend every day of the 23-week period. We will not be able to honour any holiday that has been booked during the training programme.

Will I need to live away from home while I'm training?

If the role requires a period of intensive training at one of our offices or an Energy Academy, then you may be required to live away from home during the training. This will only be when absolutely necessary. When we deem that the distances involved in getting to the training are too far to travel each day, accommodation would be provided at the Company's expense.

Concerned that the recruitment offer is not genuine?

Please be aware of fraudulent recruitment activity. British Gas will never offer a job or contract without first having gone through a detailed recruitment process which will involve at least one face-to-face meeting or assessment centre. If an offer looks fraudulent, it probably is. Offers coming from email accounts which are not from British Gas or the Centrica group, such as .yahoo, .msn, .hotmail, are fraudulent. Do not share personal information with these accounts and report anything suspicious to careers@centrica.com.

How flexible are you on location or hours?

We have policies to offer practical support to help our employees meet their personal responsibilities. We are constantly identifying new opportunities to offer more flexibility in your work - providing the tools, equipment and support processes to enable you to work effectively wherever you are, and in a way that suits your preferred style. However some roles do require shift working and certain core hours to be covered so flexibility is not always possible.

What training and development opportunities would I be given?

If you want to make the most of your career, we'll encourage you all the way.

Are there any international opportunities?

British Gas only operates in the UK, however, Centrica has offices in the Netherlands, Germany, Norway and North America as well as the UK and the opportunities will depend on your skills and motivation.

As part of the British Gas Apprenticeship Programme all apprentices, irrespective of age, will embark on the British Gas Award Programme, which is aligned to the coveted Duke of Edinburgh's Gold Award

I exited a test part way through - can I take it again?

How to reset your test

Our ability tests have time limits so you will need to work quickly but accurately. You also need to complete each test in a single sitting - if you leave the test partway through the clock is still ticking - you will not be able to resume the test from the point where you left off; the test timer will continue to count down in your absence. So don't leave the ability tests before you've completed all the questions!

Unfortunately, with the internet being how it is we know that sometimes a small number of candidates have connection problems when taking the tests and are forced to leave the tests partway through. To minimise these problems we recommend, where possible, you try and use a reliable web connection and PC.

If you are forced to exit an ability test partway through you can request a test reset. This will wind the test-timer and your score back to zero. You will be able to start the test again from the start - but you will not be given the same questions that you saw on your first go.

To reset a test you need to log back into your application and click to continue the assessments. On your assessment progress page you will see that the option to reset has appeared next to the affected test; click this to reset the test.

The first time you request a reset the assessment system automatically checks your previous test session to make sure your request is valid. If you reset a test more than once a member of the recruitment team will check your request manually - so please expect a short delay.

Please note that the reset facility only applies to the ability tests. You can not reset the personality questionnaire because it is not timed.

What pre-employment checks can I expect to be done?

The checks conducted will vary depending on the role you have been recruited for. In all cases we will confirm your right to work in the UK and conduct a financial check, as well as a Basic Disclosure check (also known as a Basic criminal record check). We will also take up as appropriate some or all of the following: 3 or 5 year employer references, professional qualification or membership, education, FSA or Director checks.

Did you find the answer you were looking for? If not, contact us.

What does a criminal record check involve?

We will obtain a Basic Disclosure check. In a limited number of cases a higher level of investigation may be conducted but where this is the case it will be stated in advance. The Basic Disclosure check will confirm to us any convictions (including road traffic offences) not considered spent under the terms of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974.

Did you find the answer you were looking for? If not, contact us.

Do I need to declare any convictions in advance?

Yes. When asked you should declare any unspent convictions (no matter how irrelevant you may feel they are) on your application or at the earliest opportunity. If you fail to self declare and a conviction is brought to our notice via the check, we may view this as an attempt to conceal the offence from us.

Did you find the answer you were looking for? If not, contact us.

What is an unspent criminal conviction?

It is your responsibility to know if any offence you've committed is spent or not. If you're unsure you should seek guidance from the issuing authority. Please note that this will include road traffic offences.

Did you find the answer you were looking for? If not, contact us.

I have an unspent criminal conviction registered against me. Does this mean I can't work for Centrica?

Whilst all roles within Centrica require a Basic Disclosure check, each case is reviewed individually; some of the factors we take into consideration are:

  • Nature of offence(s)
  • Were the offence(s) fully and openly declared to us in advance or did we only become aware as a result of the disclosure check
  • Does the disclosure show more than one offence committed over a period of time
  • Would the penalty imposed in relation to the offence(s) negatively impact on your ability to carry out the duties of the role

Having fully considered the matter we will take a realistic view as to whether or not the offence(s) committed impacts on our ability to employ you in the role.

Did you find the answer you were looking for? If not, contact us.

What does a financial check show?

The financial check conducted by Centrica looks for any bankruptcies, sequestrations or debt relief orders. It also checks for county court judgements, sheriff court decrees, individual voluntary arrangements, protected trust deeds and administration or composition orders registered in your name.

Did you find the answer you were looking for? If not, contact us.

Do I need to declare any adverse financial history in advance?

Yes. When asked you should declare any bankruptcies, sequestrations or debt relief orders. You must also disclose any county court judgements, sheriff court decrees, individual voluntary arrangements, protected trust deeds, administration or composition orders on your application or at the earliest opportunity. If you fail to self declare and an issue is brought to our notice via the check, we may view this as an attempt to conceal it from us.

Did you find the answer you were looking for? If not, contact us.

I have a county court judgement registered against me. Does this mean I can't work for Centrica?

No. We will take a realistic view as to whether your adverse financial history, in its entirety, fits within what we consider to be an acceptable limit.

Did you find the answer you were looking for? If not, contact us.
