Centrica picked up the Top Employer for Working Families Best for Carers and Eldercare Award
The nationwide awards celebrate and showcase the policies and practices of UK employers who offer exceptional flexible and family-friendly workplaces.
Sarah Jackson, chief executive of Working Families, the UK’s leading work-life balance charity, said Centrica had demonstrated “the best and most innovative practices” and had “gone the extra mile” to support its carers.
Centrica is one of the few large companies to offer paid leave for carers and actively engages with employees with caring responsibilities to increase understanding of the challenges they face.
British Gas have been successful in renewing our Community Mark, a recognition of excellence in community investment. Only 36 companies currently hold this sought after standard, which is provided by Business in the Community. This award recognises the high standard of our community investment strategy and both the community impact and business benefits as a result of our initiatives, including:
The British Gas Energy Trust which supports people struggling to pay their energy bills, with grants and debt advice. Over the last decade we have invested over £75 million in the Trust.
Helping to build the skills Britain needs for a bright future through apprenticeships, and our support for young unemployed people through pre-employment training and work experience via Movement to Work
Our schools programme, Generation Green, which encourages young people to learn about energy.

The People in Power Awards, was held at Stamford Bridge on Thursday 17 June 2015. British Gas won first prize for 'People in Power', which was awarded for "working smarter to help raise awareness and change perceptions of female engineers in the workplace and support the British Gas vision to have a workforce that closely reflects the diversity of its customer base."
This award comes as a result of a number of initiatives, including community involvement by our people. We hosted Connected Forums across three locations to connect and inspire our female field teams. Following those forums our female engineers visited 16 schools during National Apprentice Week promoting females in engineering to promote more female interest in the industry.
Scottish Gas has been awarded the Best Work Environment accolade at Scotland’s Best Employer Awards 2014.
These awards recognise companies that put employees at the heart of its business, promoting development, health and wellbeing as critical to success.
The judges said that our Edinburgh office “puts people at its heart” – and was the clear winner in their eyes. Edinburgh also won gold earlier this month in the Healthy Working Lives Awards.
British Gas IS Supplier Relationship Management has won the Best IT Team Entry Award at the Real IT Awards 2014.
The judges commented: “Applying great governance processes and forming genuine value partnerships, this team have realised some outstanding commercial benefits. Working beyond internal team structures & truly partnering, a results-driven team that delivered on its promise.”
The Oracle Excellence Awards program recognizes customers and partners that have excelled in driving business value together with Oracle.
Mark Read, a Platform Support Lead at British Gas Energy, was announced as the winner of the Proactive Support Champion award at Oracle Open World, San Francisco in September.
Our British Gas colleagues were worthy winners of the IT UK Industry Awards - Data Centre Project of the Year award, for our Data Centre Migration and Transformation Project. This is awarded to a public or private sector entrant for the most outstanding IT project in implementing or significantly upgrading a data centre.
Our British Gas Smart Metering team won 3 awards at the Supply Chain Standard European Excellence Awards 2014 for our British Gas Smart Metering Supply Chain & Asset Management Project:
Centrica's efforts to support the Armed Forces were formally recognised in November, being presented with a Silver Employer Recognition Award at Blenheim Palace.
This means that Centrica demonstrates "support for Defence, employing at least one Reservist" whilst "actively communicating and upholding a positive stance to their employees via established HR policies and procedures."
British Gas won the 2013 Best Utility Supplier category at the annual IMRG eCommerce Awards for market-leading work in their digital offering. These awards celebrate excellence and innovation in e-commerce and were attended by representatives from many leading brands and influential e-commerce figures.
At the inaugural TheFIRM awards, Centrica scooped the award for "Best On-boarding Experience" for the Centrica Gateway on-boarding web site.
The judges were impressed by Centrica's flexibility of solution and with its easy engagement via social media and had "thought of everything". An excellent job of making the on-boarding experience personal or tailored to the individual, regardless of pay grade. One judge said "I tried to find fault, but I couldn't – a brilliant project, excellently delivered and executed with huge benefits."
British Gas has gained a top national award for its support for carers in the 'best for carers and eldercare' category at the 2013 Working Families Awards, which recognise the efforts of UK employers to enable the best quality of work-life balance and career development. This follows on from the two awards and a top 10 ranking in the UK's Top Employers for Working Families for 2011, and three further awards gained during 2010.
Working Families, the charity which runs the awards in partnership with the Institute for Employment Studies, said that British Gas "demonstrated a well-developed and comprehensive approach to carers which has widespread coverage across the organisation" and that "their core message is that supporting carers in the workforce isn't just about being a good employer, but that it is something that is good for business".
The introduction of a single company-wide integrated management system (IMS) for British Gas operations was deemed as a substantial achievement will underpin future improvements across the business, with the company winning the Best Health and Safety Achievement in Utility & Offshore 2013 award.
At the European Smart Metering Awards, the Utility of the Year Award was awarded to British Gas for its continued focus on customer involvement and its track record in informing consumers of the benefits of smart metering.
For the Frontline Team of the Year award, the British Gas Innovation Centre Team in Hattersley was regarded as highly commended for its customer service and operations prowess.
In the category of Large Employer of the Year 2013, British Gas was highly commended.
In the last 7 years apprentices have accounted for 28% of the British Gas engineering workforce, with many employees having the opportunity to take up varied career once their Apprenticeship is complete.
In addition, over 50 of the British Gas apprentices have become line managers within 5 years of completing their Apprenticeships.
British Gas CHI (Central Heating Installations) won a RoSPA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents) Gold award, which takes pride of place with the Bronze award the team won last year. Both awards are for CHI’s commitment to improving health and safety standards and are given in recognition of safety performance, planning and reducing workplace accidents.
British Gas was crowned Team of the Year (Loving the Customer) at the UK Customer Experience Awards
The focus now is on how it can evolve to keep enhancing the service offered to customers in the hope that it can regain the title in 2014.
